Intraoral-TMJ Work
In
today's stressful society, many of us grind or
clench our teeth, particularly at night when
sleeping. This can lead to long-term headaches,
neck tension, and jaw pain, not to mention the
resultant damage to one's teeth and/or TM joint.
Working with tooth damage
is beyond my scope of practice (although I
highly recommend anyone who has a teeth/jaw
clenching habit to visit their dentist and
discuss getting a nightguard!), but I can assist
with relaxing the jaw muscles and opening
chronically tight tissue. For maximum efficacy,
I usually wear gloves and work inside the mouth.
(Not all clients are comfortable with this; if
that is the case, I refrain from intraoral work
to concentrate on the muscles available only
from the outside.)
